The Wondrous Beauty Of The Seasonal Flowers Of Japan!

Perhaps the most famous seasonal flowers in Japan are the Japanese cherry blossoms which bloom every year in late spring, beautiful pink and white blooms whose scent fills the streets, wafting their way into windows and cracks in doors. As the flowers bloom and fall they carpet the area beneath the trees, with several trees in a row it can look like a carpet of pink leading off into the beautiful hills of Japan.

The Sakura blossoms as they are called in Japanese are a huge tourist attraction and are part of a spring festival that takes place in Japan every year. The celebrations include huge fireworks shows and much drinking and partying. If you think Japan is full of quiet, withdrawn people then you havent been to Japan during their spring Sakura festival. Japanese culture is all about nature and in Haikus any reference to the cherry blossoms is a reference to spring and the joy of new life. The cherry blossoms have become so popular that they are instantly recognizable as a symbol of Japan. Their incredible beauty and ephemeral nature has come to represent human life in Japanese culture.

Plum blossoms also find their way out of the cold and snow in spring, although much earlier in the season than cherry blossoms. These delicate purple buds are considerably less celebrated than the Sakura blossoms, however during the Edo and Momoyama periods they were all the rage in Japan, becoming the focus of painting compositions. Japanese painting is a search for perfection, a Japanese artist can dedicate his or her life to perfectly capturing the essence of a Plum blossom in spring or a cherry blossom and will dedicate twenty or thirty years only to painting these flowers.

The Iris and Morning Glory are also to be found seasonally in Japan. Irises are also spring flowers with beautiful dark purple petals and a complementary yellow inner ring. Morning Glories are gorgeous blue flowers that bloom in the morning and fade by late afternoon. Seasonal flowers are important in Japanese poetry and literature as the Japanese are very much concerned with subtlety and so any reference to a Sakura blossom indicates the poem is set near the end of spring and so on. Ceramic ornaments, lacquered dishes and kimonos are often decorated with highly stylized versions of these seasonal flowers.

The Difference Between Annual and Perennial Flower Gardening

One of the most wonderful gifts that God has bequeathed this earth is the gift of vibrant and radiant flowers. It is truly hard to imagine a world without these colorful blooms that give life to our surroundings and uplift our spirits. Although there is a great variety of flowering plants, gardeners make things simpler by classifying them as either annuals or perennials.

Annual flowers are those that complete their lifecycle in only one growing season, which means that they grow foliage, bloom into flowers, set seed and dies all in just one year. Perennials on the other hand are more long lasting as they are able to re-grow and last for more than two years. Just looking at their lifespan, it is clear that annual and perennial flowers both have their own advantages and disadvantages.

By knowing these, it will be easier for you to make your choice as to which you will prefer to plant in your garden. For one, because of its short life span, it is important to know that annuals require more work than perennials because you will have to replant annuals each year. Not to mention, perennials are generally easy to care for and less prone to pest problems, thus are low maintenance compared with annuals.

However, take note that even though perennials have longer life spans than annuals, annual flowers bloom for a longer time, giving you more time to enjoy the beauty and fragrance of the blooms, which last all throughout summer. Perennials flowers wilt more quickly and as a result you will have to content yourself in watching their foliage, which some gardeners find equally interesting and appealing.

Also, annuals are said to be more vibrant and colorful than perennials. But this part is of course a subjective area and depends largely on peoples personal taste. What is true however is how perennials are better investments than annuals in the sense that even if perennial flower seeds are more expensive than annuals, in the long run you will find that you are saving more with perennial seeds because they last for a longer time. Looking again at the aesthetics of the annuals, aside from having colorful and radiant blooms, annuals also provide excitement by giving your garden a brand new look each year, which is not possible if you are stuck with the same perennials every year.

However, those who are sentimental and have grown to love their perennials will not look at it as being stuck rather they see their plants as loyal friends and are grateful for having them for company for a long time. All things considered, it is not really a debate on which flower is more beautiful or longer lasting or easier to care for. What matters is choosing the right type that will suit your personality, abilities, and needs as a gardener.

If you are still torn between the two, consider growing both of these plants in your garden which will give you the loyalty of perennials and the radiance of annuals.

A Man's Guide to Flower Delivery at the Office

The following guide will save you many headaches, and potential embarrassments, when selecting flowers for a coworker. Most men probably think roses are always a safe bet, but depending on the situation roses may not be well-received. In fact, sending roses when the situation is not appropriate makes you appear a little too forward, especially at the office where overt displays of affection are generally unwelcome. Deciding when and what flowers to send is the hard part, so here are a few of the best flower selections for those you appreciate.

Employee Illness
In most large organizations it is customary to send a flower arrangement to a coworker who is seriously ill. It is a nice reminder to those feeling blue that their friends at the office are thinking of them, and wishing them a speedy recovery. An arrangement of sunflowers makes an uplifting bouquet. Be sure to check with hospitals before ordering as some have implemented strict policies on flower deliveries. If necessary, have the order delivered to the employee's home address.

Death of a Loved One
If a coworker suffers the loss of a loved one you should consider sending an arrangement of flowers to their home. Consider asking the flower shop if you can include a hand written sympathy card as this makes the gesture more personal. Irises and tulips in pale shades of blue, yellow and purple are good flower selections.

Birthdays
Sending a big bouquet of lilies to a coworker on their birthday will have the desired effect of drawing lots of attention and brightening the mood of the entire office. Tread carefully here. If you send a birthday bouquet to your secretary, but not the office receptionist, employees could cry favoritism and your entire plan of improving employee morale will backfire.

New Additions
If one of your employees has become a new parent send over an arrangement of flowers to the maternity ward. Don't worry about pinks for girls and blues for boys, just stay with bright colors of seasonal flowers such as tulips or hydrangeas in the spring and summer months.
Apology
If you are like most men admitting you screwed up is about as easy as asking for directions, but simply owning up to your goof is not enough. Sending a simple flower arrangement along with a handwritten card will go a long way towards healing hurt feelings. Don't go overboard here or else your flowers will look more like a bribe. Stick to something simple like orchids in a small arrangement.

Hydrangea Planting Guide

With hydrangea planting, you first need to choose what type of hydrangeas you wish to plant. There are many different varieties, all of which grow to different heights, work better in some areas, than in others, and require different levels of care.

For the most part, you will find hydrangeas very large and beautiful plants. With hydrangea planting determine the area you wish to plant, this will help you in determining the specific plant you want in regards to height. You can expect a hydrangea to grow anywhere from four to twelve feet tall, so you want to take this into consideration when planting.

Furthermore, choosing the site is probably the hardest thing about hydrangea planting. You have to be really careful of where you choose to plant your hydrangea. First, consider the amount of sunlight the area gets, as well as when it gets the most sunlight. Most hydrangeas thrive in areas that receive partial to full sunlight. Performance is at its best when the plant receives full sun in the morning hours and shade during the afternoon areas.

Next, look for an area in which the plant will be protected from wind. In an area that experiences high wind the foilage will dry out and cause extensive stress on the hydrangea. Because hydrangea planting is one of the easiest and requires the less fuss, you can relax knowing the the plant can grow in many different types of soil. However, you do want to check the soil and make certain it remains moist and is prime for a plant. You will have no problems in growing the plant itself in soil with lower pH levels, however, you will find that the soil itself can have a direct impact on the bloom color.

Hydrangea Planting - When To Plant

The most beneficial time of the year to plant hydrangeas is during the early months in the fall season. You should case out the area you wish to plant and make sure you place compost in the soil mixture. Know the size of your root ball, this will help in determining the width of the hole you need to dig. You should dig a hole that is about twenty-four inches wider than that of the root measurement.

Hydrangea Planting - Care

Hydrangeas require relatively little fuss. You may need to prune the plant lightly to ensure a healthy plant. Fertilization is recommended on a twice yearly basis, once in the latter part of the fall season and once during the early part of spring. It is recommended when fertlizing, that you use a slow release compound. Be sure you do not over fertilize the plant or you may find that you have beautiful foilage, but little to no flowering.

Cheap Flower Bulbs

For many enthusiasts of horticulture, the cost of pursuing their interest in plants and flowers is a deterring factor. Whether it is to grow an indoor or an outdoor flowering plant, one must order seeds, plants or flower bulbs from a productive and economic source. They can be purchased from local stores, nurseries and online sources. Most varieties are available at a certain fixed price range, but customers should definitely look around before making a final purchase. This is because it is occasionally possible to find a cheaper flower bulb or a seed with a certain supplier.

Flower bulb varieties are sold in a wide range of prices --- from very cheap to very expensive. Quite obviously, the exotic or unique types of flower bulbs are always priced high. This makes them out of reach for very many people. It is sensible to shop around to get discounts on flower bulbs.

A number of people opt for buying flower bulbs from a wholesaler. Many flower companies offer discounted wholesale prices based on minimum order requirements. These offers are usually well advertised and are a good source of flower bulbs at reasonable rates.

The most effective way to buy flower bulbs at cheap rates is by purchasing them at annual or seasonal flower sales. Many florists organize these special sales at various times of the year in a bid to popularize their brand image and offer fabulous price cuts to attract new buyers.

Many large stores offer incentives for regular buyers of flower bulbs and it does pay to be loyal to one store. Many companies also organize off-season sales, and provide a good opportunity to buy flower bulbs at a cheap price. Both amateur and professional gardeners, while looking for discounts should also check the quality of the flower bulbs before purchasing them.

Flower Bulbs provides detailed information on Flower Bulbs, Flower Bulb Catalog, Flower Bulbs for Sale, Wholesale Flower Bulbs and more. Flower Bulbs is affiliated with Silk Wedding Flowers

A Florist's Guide to Ordering Flowers for Holiday Gifts

You might think ordering flowers is a simple business; just pick up the phone and tell the person who answers what you want or simply go to a florist's website and order using a picture you like. It can be that simple but if you want the best value for your money, the best possible service, and the nicest possible arrangement of flowers you might want to consider a few of these tips.

Order early.

By early, I don't mean early in the day on the holiday, I mean a week or more before the holiday. While you can achieve some of the benefits of ordering early by ordering just a few days before the holiday the maximum benefit comes from ordering before the week of the holiday starts. The benefits of ordering early are many.

Your order will have a higher priority than those received on the day of the holiday itself. If you've ordered something of limited availability or something that requires the florist to special order product it gives the designers the ability to place that special order or to be sure the specific product will be set aside for your order.

Florists tend to fill early orders first which will tend to score you the best flowers and arrangements. This means the floral designer that makes your order will be fresh, not too fatigued, and still full of creative energy. Also, many floral designers won't admit it but everywhere I've worked I've seen that designers want the best for themselves (their clients, actually) so they use the flowers they think are the most beautiful and best first. Logically, they should use flowers with an eye to evenly distributing the choice blooms among all orders but in practice this is not the case.

Another benefit is that if you are trying to have flowers delivered in a specific time window such as before noon or after 3pm the florist will be more likely to be able to accommodate your request. As the actual day of the holiday grows nearer timed deliveries will be cut off because only a limited number of such orders can be taken. The florist only has so many delivery vehicles and delivery drivers and timed deliveries are requested by customers far more often for holidays than for day-to-day deliveries.

Have all your information ready.

Before placing your call or making your Internet order get together all of the information that you'll need. Have your credit card out and have the recipient's complete address and phone number in front of you - even if the location the flowers will be delivered to is a business. If the flowers are going to a business it is helpful to know their hours of business. Be mindful that some businesses close early for holidays or let employees leave early even if they don't.

Decide what you want on the card before you call.

Sending flowers is a lovely, emotional gesture. If you want the full impact you'll want something more intimate than Love, Bob on the enclosure card. If you want to say more, go right ahead, just limit it to one short paragraph at most unless you plan on dropping off the signed card yourself. The standard enclosure cards that florists use are pretty small.

Have at least a general idea of what you want before you order - or decide to let the designer choose.

You don't need to know exactly what you want to order but it's a good idea to narrow it down a bit. If you know the recipient's favorite color or flower that would make a good starting point. Another broad category is style. Does the recipient like things that are old fashioned, feminine, or modern? If you simply don't know what sort of arrangement he or she will like your best option is to leave the choice up to the designer. Nothing thrills a floral designer quite like the words designer's choice on an order. Most designers see this as a real treat and as a chance to really show off their best work. When I order flowers I almost exclusively order designer's choice arrangements and I've never been disappointed.

Be aware of how much flowers cost.

The price of gas has gone up, groceries have gone up, and so have flowers. Flowers get shipped great distances in refrigerated trucks before reaching the floral shop. With the sky-high cost of fuel and rising energy costs this has made flowers more costly. Also, at the holidays the price of flowers goes up. The growers charge the wholesalers more and in turn the wholesalers charge the florists more and then you get to pay more, too.

Florists charge for delivery and the price of gas has driven delivery charges up, too. Out of town deliveries or wire service orders to other cities or states will have an additional transmission charge which ranges from $3 to $15 depending on what service plan your florist uses. When you are deciding how much to spend don't forget to keep delivery and wire service charges in mind. Just because you spend $50 it doesn't mean you are going to get $50 worth of flowers. If you are sending those flowers out of state through your local florist you are likely to get a $30 arrangement for that $50 spent. You can trim these costs by directly calling a florist in the city you are sending flowers to or by ordering online.

$45 to $55 in addition to delivery (and wire service charges for out of state orders) is an average price to pay for an average arrangement on an average day. It may be less than average on a holiday.

Don't be surprised if it doesn't look exactly like the photo.

Take a look at the small print on the bottom of your florist's web page - most florists reserve the right to substitute flowers. Florists don't make substitutions if they don't have to - but they will substitute similar flowers to achieve a similar look if the flowers in the photograph run out or are not available. This is more likely to happen at the holidays because the demand is so great at that time.

Give the florist a second choice.

This applies in several situations. If you are sending flowers out of state through your local floral shop you'll either need to send a less specific order or have a second choice picked out in case your first choice is not available. If you are extremely specific about what you want, particularly in regards to collectible containers for arrangements you'll want to give a second choice - if you didn't order at least a week before the holiday. A second choice for your arrangement can be as simple as asking for the floral designer to make an arrangement as similar as possible to the one you've chosen or choosing another pictured item.

Opt for early delivery.

If you forget the holiday and send flowers the day after it's not so swift but if your loved one gets flowers a day ahead of everyone else - that's pretty cool! It adds to the surprise value because it's kind of unexpected. Also, it reduces the chances of your arrangement getting crowded into a delivery vehicle with too many other deliveries and driven around town by an inexperienced seasonal driver.

After the flowers have been delivered - call the florist.

If the recipient is unhappy with the flowers (they arrived wilted, broken, or frozen) call right away. Most shop owners are more than happy to work things out with you. Just be polite and patient and your problem should be swiftly resolved.
If the recipient loved the flowers call or email your florist the next day and let them know. This will absolutely make someone's day (maybe even more than the flowers made your loved one's day!) and it will make your local florist see you not just as a customer but as a great customer. I can almost guarantee any future service from your florist will be excellent.
